Treasured Taggies™

Recently I went to Target and as always, ventured to the baby section. I saw this piece of fabric with tags sticking out for a whopping $14. I was in such awe I started laughing with my friend about it. She reassured me and declared how cool they actually were. "They're Taggies, helps with sensory development. Babies like to play with the tags or something". Crazy enough I had seen my four-month old daughter playing with the tags on a toy she has. Fourteen dollars is just absurd.

I went home and decided to make us our own toys.

Now I am going to show you how to make your own..

Gather your supplies..

For this project I went around my house and found different materials to incorporate into the toy. I tried to look for things that had different textures, widths, and colors.

Materials needed:

  • Fabric (I used princesses)

  • Tags- ribbon, elastic, beads, tassels, cord, etc. I found old stockings with ribbon, gift bags with ribbon, broken jewelry with beads, old shirts with ruffles. Get creative!

  • Batting

  • Rotary board

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

Let's get started..

Decide how large your desired toy is. The toy I chose to make for my daughter is pictured, however, my friends toy measures 11"x11".

  1. Cut your fabric to the desired size (2 pieces)

  2. Cut your tags into 4" strips

  3. Cut batting to size of fabric

  4. Place the batting onto the back side of one of the pieces of fabric

  5. Fold your tags and place them with the loop towards the inside of the fabric, pattern side up. Allow a half an inch to hang off the edge of the fabric (pictured)

  6. Place the other piece of fabric on top of the loops so that each pattern is facing each other and the batting is on the outside.

  7. Pin together both pieces of fabric. I found it easiest if you put the pins through the ribbon in order to keep them straight. The opening of the loops should be sticking over the edge of the fabric (pictured)

Construction..

  1. Sew together the two pieces of fabric on all of the edges. Leave about a two inch gap open to be able to turn the fabric inside out

  2. Take out the pins one at a time and hold the ribbons in place while you sew over them.

  3. Turn the fabric inside out

  4. Sew along the two inch gap

  5. Sew along the entire border to create a lip (pictured with the dotted line in blueprints)

I found this to be one of the easiest sewing projects I have accomplished so far!

I hope you enjoy this simple craft project as much as Charley loves her toy! Creating this toy was very easy, and free by using things I already had around the house. If you do not have fabric you could use a receiving blanket or an old shirt. This craft leaves a lot of room for your individual creativity to shine!
